Open House Checklist

  • Keep sinks and counter tops neat and uncluttered. They must be clean and free of items on a daily basis
  • Any dirty dishes are cleaned and put away into cupboards
  • Put away any laundry and store dirty laundry in washer or a decorative laundry basket with a lid to hide the contents
  • All personal photos and family pictures packed
  • All collections and personal items stored
  • Any valuable items taken to a safety deposit box
  • Children’s toys are picked up and placed in tidy bedrooms
  • All ashtrays from every room
  • Open the blinds/drapes for every open house
  • Turn on every light for every showing, even during the day
  • Make sure the light bulbs are working and have adequate wattage
  • Turn on the air conditioning during the summer and the heat during the winter. Your house needs to be comfortable during open houses
  • Empty all garbage containers, and check around outside the property
  • All shoes and boots from the front entry and tidy closet
  • Be sensitive to odours. Buyers certainly are! Cooking or smoking odours, cat or dog, baby, laundry and mildew odours turn off buyers.
  • All pets need to be absent during every open house and all showings. Many buyers are allergic to animals or simply afraid of them. Store pet supplies.
  • Homeowners and children are not home during open houses and showings
  • Make all beds
  • Play soft relaxing music throughout the house
  • Wash and sweep decks, patios and walkways
